Masonry block cavities decrease surface mass and increase internal resonances in blocks, impairing sound insulation. To minimize this effect, block septa can be filled with porous material, creating internal damping of sound waves. A potential material for this purpose is expanded vermiculite. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the use of expanded vermiculite in the filling of ceramic block septa in masonry walls to increase the acoustic insulation of these building systems, through sound transmission loss tests. For such purpose, 12 samples were prepared with ceramic blocks of different geometries in the following compositions: uncoated, plastered and mortar coated. In addition, for each composition samples were constructed without and with the filling of the septa of the blocks with expanded vermiculite. In addition, for each samples were constructed without and with the filling of the septa of the blocks with expanded vermiculite. The noise reduction index was determined following the parameters of ISO 10140: 2010, being the tests performed in UNISINOS reverberant chamber. Filling the septa of the 14 cm-thick blocks provided an increase in their sound insulation by up to 13 dB.
