Abstract

Contest context

Despite the fact that in Brazil there has been a significant advance in relation to the acoustic design of buildings in recent years, we are still far from consolidating this aspect as an important topic in the training of architects and engineers.

Leo Beranek, one of the most important scientists and engineers in the field of acoustics of the last hundred years, reports in his book “Riding with the waves” the tension, expectation and the result, judged disastrous, of the opening of Avery Fisher Hall in 1962, that would house the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was a part of the community capable of appreciating music and differentiating unique aspects of a concert, among them, in a way as important as musical interpretation or the experience of vision, Acoustics.

This episode illustrates the importance of the professional in the area for the final result. And we must not be mistaken: everyday situations can be compromised if the acoustics are not adequate for the purpose of the use of the space, even if not consciously.

In Brazil, the history of acoustics has some pioneers who dedicated themselves to the advancement of science and its dissemination at different levels. One of these pioneers moved differently both among musicians and among “acoustics”: Conrado Silva de Marco. Born in Uruguay, he spent most of his professional life in Brazil, where he was professor of acoustics and music at several institutions, including the University of Brasília, Faculdades Santa Marcelina, Escola de Belas Artes de São Paulo and Universidade do Estado de Sao Paulo. His work is as important for architects and engineers as it is for composers linked to electroacoustic music.

In honor of this important historical figure, we launch here the 1st Student Acoustics Contest of Salas Conrado Silva organized by the organizing committee of the XXVIII Meeting of the Brazilian Society of Acoustics, which takes place on October 03, 04 and 05, 2018, at the Campus of Porto Alegre from Unisinos.

Inspired by the legacy of Conrado Silva, we chose as a theme the elaboration of a project for a multipurpose room. We believe that this will contribute to consolidate the importance of acoustics in the academic community, as well as arouse curiosity and encourage creativity in architecture and engineering students in the search for solutions to the proposed problem.
